Please Stop Your Complaining About SXSW

The SXSW conference has now come to an end for me. If you’re not sure what SXSW is it’s a conference held in Austin, Texas for social media, technology, film, and music fans. I suggest checking out their web site for more information if you’re interested in attending next year.

I just drove six hours in the car by myself so I have had a lot of time to digest and think about my experience with SXSW. As I listened to the top 20 hits on my radio I was reminded of dancing at some of the great parties I attended. “Spring Break For Geeks” really is a great description of this event. No offense to the geeks out there because I’m right there with you. My love for Star Wars, web sites, video, and Twitter puts me in the club too.

So what was my beef with SXSW? Nothing. Sorry to disappoint by not ripping SXSW apart, but I’m just not that type of person. I’m always a glass is half full kind of person.

Now don’t get me wrong some feedback to improve the event for the next year is always great. I actually just submitted my report card online. But people who complain just to complain I just don’t get it. It’s just not me.

Now I’m not always happy. I have days that frankly suck. But I try to look on the bright side of things or if I’m not happy try to change what’s making me not happy.

I couldn’t believe when I heard people complaining about their company paying for their tickets and making them go to this event. Are you kidding me? What an incredible opportunity and you didn’t have to pay a dime.

For me I’m the CEO of my own company so it’s a little different. I decided I wanted to go and it’s a business expense for the company.

Ok now I feel like I’m complaining about the complainers! So let me share with you what I loved about SXSW.

I loved the people....

The people are probably the best part of SXSW. About 12,000 people who get social media, are open to meeting anyone, and have so much motivation to do amazing things in their business. I was excited two of my friends from different sides of the country came together and roomed with me during the conference. I highly recommend finding a buddy to either room with or hang with during the conference. As a woman I especially felt safer having other people to walk around downtown with and eat dinner with. But if you don’t have this it’s ok. Everyone is very friendly and if you go with the flow you will just end up going to dinner with whoever is around when you get hungry. Or you can always grab a slice of pizza and sit on a street corner which I did one night.

You also never know who you are going to meet and when. While trying to figure out the weird parking meter that wouldn’t let me pay I met a CNN producer who was very nice.

And I got to reconnect with some of the amazing people I had met in Las Vegas last year for Scott Stratten’s Tweetup. I also heard Scott sing karaoke at the Tech Karaoke party. Video will be posted later! I learned how to belly dance with my friend Elizabeth PW. That was certainly a fun experience.

So I mainly went for the people. To meet twitter friends in real life or reconnect with friends who I had already met.

I loved the parties....

I don’t think I ever went to a SXSW sanctioned party. Mainly because I didn’t want to wait in lines. Probably the best highlight of a party for me was being served wine by Gary Vee at his wine party. And all I could say was “thank you”. Speaking of “thank you” check out his video about what an important phrase this is.

The next party highlight was the being a VIP at the Microsoft party. Dancing, free drinks, and food can’t beat it. Microsoft sure knows how to throw a good party. I heard Ashton Kutcher made an appearance there, but I only chase after the “new dork” web celebrities like Gary Vee, Scott Stratten, and Chris Brogan. Ashton is just not for my tastes....

I loved Gary Vee’s speech...

This was what I came to see and he did not disappoint. I laughed, I learned, and the presentation even spontaneously ended with a rap about Gary. I’m not kidding. Best take away from speech was his message "You can't scale caring it's not authentic." His point was pay attention to your brand on social media and say thank you. While you can’t reply to everyone on Twitter or to every email as you get bigger, Gary certainly tries his hardiest.

I loved the food....

The food was yummy. My favorite place is Cafe Crepe and I got to have a breakfast Crepe at lunch time. Breakfast is my favorite meal, but I normally missed it because I was sleeping so late.

I loved the weather....

The weather except for one day was perfect. Beautiful, sunny, and warm. Thank you Austin for best weather which made everything so much easier.

So there’s my take on SXSW. Of course there are things I would do better next year. I would make sure to connect with everyone I wanted to connect with i.e. stalk them. Also, I would take more pictures and video, but you know what overall I’m so happy with my experience. You just can’t beat connecting with others! Are You Waiting Too Long To Worry About SEO

Whether you’re setting up a new website or revamping an existing one, you have a million things on your mind. You’re thinking about things like, choosing the right logo, colors and graphics and hiring the right web designer, programmer and writer. Just to name a few.

Each of the professionals you hire will tell you the one thing that is most important for your website – from their perspective. The designer will say that the colors and graphics must be first rate. The programmer will say that the site must function properly and to do so, it must have first rate coding. And, the writer will tell you that nothing matters but what you say. After all, if no one can read your website, no one will buy.

They’re all right, of course. But none of what they say will matter if no one arrives at your website. In order to drive new visitors to your site, you need search engines.

Customer First, SEO Second

Unfortunately, many small business owners find themselves in a situation where they’ve spent thousands of dollars on a site their customers won’t even be able to find. Why? Customers can’t find the site because it can’t be indexed by the search engines.

What does this mean?

Search engines use programs called robots or spiders that “crawl” the Internet. Basically, these automated programs follow links from one web page or website to another. When they find new content or a new website, they index, or save, what they find. Then, when a visitor to the search engine results page (SERP) types in a keyword, the information is in the search engine’s index, and this is then displayed to the visitor. The visitor then clicks on the result that he thinks will best meet his needs.

You can make sure your site is easy to index by following these 5 guidelines:

• Make SEO your first priority. Find a reputable SEO professional who can advise you on what your website needs in order to be search engine friendly.

• Stay involved in the website building process and make sure you know exactly what methods each professional is using in the construction of your site.

• Avoid website that are built in Flash or Ajax or that hide your content in a graphic. Spiders can’t read content that is hidden in Flash, Ajax or a graphic. Even worse, these websites can be hard for your customers to use.

• Avoid using session IDs in addresses to your website. This is particularly important if you have a forum or shopping cart on your site. If you take a look at the address bar of your site as you navigate through it, make sure that the address is not followed by a long string of numbers.

Follow through with SEO

The guidelines above will help you make sure that the site you setup or revamp will be built in a search engine friendly manner. This will go a long way towards making your site indexable.

But, you can’t stop there.

Just like a building contractor can’t stop when the foundation is complete, and a golfer can’t stop his swing the moment his club hits the ball, you need to follow through on your SEO efforts.

Following through with keyword research, onsite and offsite SEO efforts will ensure that your customers can and will find their way to your website for years to come.

The ABCs of Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) can either be made very complex and hard to understand or very easy to comprehend. My goal in this article is to make it very easy and give you the basic ABC’s of SEO.

To sum up SEO in one sentence, it simply means getting your website(s) in favor with the search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo so they can send you lots of free traffic and then keeping your website(s) there!

First, let's start with what exactly Search Engine traffic means. While this article is not intended to be a complete guide to SEO by any means, I'll quickly cover a bit of the basics to make sure you understand them.

Here is a screen shot from Google when I typed in “mom web hosting” on my computer.

I've marked the Paid listings with black arrows, and I've marked the free “SEO” listings with a red arrow.

To get your web site listed where the black arrows are, you must sign up with the Google Adwords program which is set up as a paid advertising program and that's an entirely different subject. You trade cash for clicks, basically.

But, we'll be talking about the red area – which is FREE. I'll bet you can imagine that MomWebs.com, which has the first position in Google for “mom web hosting”, is working very hard to keep that spot. Free traffic is a good thing.

As I mentioned, Search Engine Optimization can be made very complex or very simple. In order to get traffic from the search engines, you'll need to focus on two things:

Making sure that your website is very clearly telling the Search Engines what it's about.
Making sure other people are talking about your website, too.

The first is called “on-site” factors and includes things like having posts that are relevant to your topic, having lots of great related content, and making sure your titles and images are named using words that will help Google to figure out what your website is about. It obviously gets more complex than that, but look at it like a game of 20 questions. Make sure Google, Bing, and Yahoo only have to ask a few before figuring out what you're about. If they are confused then no dice.

The second is called “Off-site” factors and is all about getting other websites to link to your website. This is the more important of the two, so focus 90% of your efforts on this. You'll want to work on anything that can get you links.

Twitter & Facebook marketing
Stumble Upon marketing
Video marketing
Press release marketing
Forum marketing
Podcasting

Anywhere you can get links to your website from quality related websites, just do it.

Create More Websites Traffic, Boost Your Credibility and Create Buzz with Video

Did you know that a day's worth of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute? It's not a surprise that every speaker at the online marketing conference I just attended talked about video. It's truly amazing the power video has in your marketing tool box. Maybe you're already convinced video has a unique power, but you're just trying to figure out the technology. Or maybe you're wondering why everyone is talking about video. Or maybe you're nervous like I was about putting yourself out there for the world to see.

I know it's hard to believe, but my video camera was just sitting around for a few years because of my perfectionism. I knew how to technically make videos, but for some reason I was being camera shy. But then I met Perry Lawrence, Ask Mr. Video.

Perry pushed me to get out there and just do it! Your first video will not be perfect so strive for 70% and then they will just get better and better.

But why is everyone talking about video and how can it help your business?

1. Traffic- Who doesn't want to be on the front page of Google for your keyword? Who doesn't want more website or blog traffic? With video all of this is possible! Using a website such as www.TubeMogul.com you can send your video everywhere on the web with just a few clicks of a button.

   2. Boost Your Credibility- Video gives you instant expert status and increases your credibility. If you're an authority or expert in your field everyone will be rushing to work with you or buy your product. Because most people are still not using video, if you use video in your business you will certainly stand out.

   3. Make Your Business Buzz Worthy- If you create a viral video, heartfelt video, or really any type of video your business becomes buzz worthy. People forward your video to others and people start to take notice because you're doing something different.

Tips for Using Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free software service that helps to track the goals of your website. Once all of the information is gathered, the program then turns that data into information that you can use to see if you are reaching your goals. This information is presented in the form or reports.

The first step in using Google Analytics is to set up an account.

There are four basic questions that you should consider when setting up your Google analytics account.

1. How many people are visiting your site?

2. Where are your visitors coming from?

3. What would you like for your visitors to do while they are on your site?

4. What are your visitors actually doing?

Once you have your account set up, you can then choose what type of information you want to track. Some important numbers to look at are:

Visitors: This is the number of people interacting on your site.

Bounce Rate: The percentage of people who left your site instantly.

Time On Site: This is the amount of time your visitors spent reading content on your site.

You can also track how your visitors got to your site. Direct traffic arrives at your site by typing in your web address. Referring URLs are other sites that are sending you traffic. Search engines include Google, Yahoo, MSN, and all of the other search engines out there.

There are over 100 different reports that you can run on your site, you select them depending on what information you want to acquire.

Once you run the reports and get the numbers, you can then see what is working on your site, and what needs to be changed. If there are certain areas on your site that are receiving high traffic, that means your readers find your information useful. If there are certain pages on your site not receiving as much traffic you may want to adjust your content accordingly.

Google Analytics is a great tool that can help you improve both the traffic and the content on your site.
